KUALA LUMPUR: Correct information on the Covid-19 vaccine must be disseminated, says Alliance for Safe Community chairmanTan Sri Lee Lam Thye (pic).
“Adverse comments – especially on social media – harp on the possible side effects of the vaccine, real or imagined.
“However, these comments fly in the face of scientific facts. Over 200mil vaccine shots that have already been administered worldwide with up to 95 per cent success rate,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 24).
He added that such a rate compares well with the many other vaccines that people have been taking for various viruses since the first vaccination in 1796, more than 224 years ago.
“Without a doubt, the majority of people need to be vaccinated to get the full benefits of the vaccination plan and to achieve herd immunity, ” he said.
“But if some people are still reluctant, in the face of overwhelming evidence of its effectiveness and safety, it is important that the correct information be provided to them in a timely manner and with empathy, ” added Lee.
Lee said that there are many ways to do this, such as through the testimonies of people who have already received their vaccination, by statistics of successful vaccinations or by videos of people sharing their thoughts and experiences.
He also called on the government to issue regular information on the road to vaccination through all available channels.
“In this respect, the MySejahtera app is doing a good job of keeping the people informed. Let them have the full facts before they decide whether they want to be vaccinated. Let it be voluntary, ” said Lee.
He said that some keep harping on the risks of the Covid-19 vaccines, citing he fact that the vaccines were available in such a short time and therefore could not have undergone stringent tests as their reasoning.
“This may not a valid argument, given the fact that developments in the modern world come at a breakneck speed,” he said.
Lee added it is the same with new medicines and new technology.
“If proof is needed, we only have to see how quickly the gig economy has grown in the wake of movement control order, ” he said.
Lee also said that plan are being made by the government to introduce an injury or protection scheme to care for those proven to have serious side effects arising from vaccination
“Leaders the world over have led the way. They have already received their shots without any documented side effects. It’s now everybody else’s turn to do their duty and take the shots as soon as they are made available. No one is safe until everyone is safe,” he said.
